Jamie Oliver Apple Crumble is a baked dessert made by topping sweetened apples with a buttery, flour-based crumble mixture. As it bakes, the apples soften and release their juices while the topping turns golden and crisp.

For the Apple Filling

    • 1 kg apples (Bramley or Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and sliced

    • 34 tablespoons caster sugar

    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

    • Juice of ½ lemon

For the Crumble Topping

    • 200 g plain flour

    • 120 g cold unsalted butter, diced

    • 100 g light brown sugar

    • Pinch of salt

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the oven

Preheat your oven to 180°C (160°C fan). Lightly butter a medium baking dish so the apples don’t stick.

Step 2: Prepare the apples

Place the sliced apples into the baking dish. Sprinkle over the caster sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Toss gently so the apples are evenly coated and well balanced in sweetness.

Step 3: Start the crumble topping

Put the flour and salt into a large bowl. Add the cold butter and rub it in with your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Keep the texture loose for a lighter topping.

Step 4: Add the sugar

Stir the brown sugar into the crumble mixture. This adds sweetness and helps the topping turn golden during baking.

Step 5: Assemble the crumble

Scatter the crumble topping evenly over the apples. Avoid pressing it down—this allows hot air to circulate and keeps the topping crisp.

Step 6: Bake

Place the dish in the oven and bake for 40–45 minutes, until the apples are soft and bubbling and the topping is golden and crisp.

Step 7: Rest before serving

Remove from the oven and let the crumble rest for 10 minutes. This allows the apple juices to thicken slightly, making it easier to serve.
