Jamie Oliver Apple Chutney

Jamie Oliver Apple Chutney

Jamie Oliver’s apple chutney is a cooked preserve made by simmering apples with vinegar, sugar, and spices until thick and flavorful, creating a sweet and tangy condiment.

Ingredients

Scale
    • 1 kg apples (peeled, cored, and chopped)

    • 1 onion (finely chopped)

    • 150g sugar (brown or white)

    • 200ml vinegar (apple cider or malt vinegar)

    • 2 cloves garlic (minced)

    • 1 teaspoon ginger (grated)

    • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds

    • 1 teaspoon cinnamon or mixed spice

    • Salt (to taste)

Optional additions:

    • Raisins or sultanas

    • Chili flakes for heat

    • Orange zest for freshness

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients Carefully

Peel, core, and chop the apples into small, even pieces. Finely chop the onion and garlic so they cook evenly and blend smoothly into the chutney.

Step 2: Combine Ingredients in a Pan

Add apples, onion, garlic, sugar, vinegar, and spices into a large saucepan. Stir everything together to evenly distribute flavors before cooking begins.

Step 3: Bring to a Gentle Boil

Place the pan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle boil. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking and ensure the sugar dissolves properly.

Step 4: Simmer Until Thickened

Reduce the heat and let the chutney simmer for 30–40 minutes. Stir regularly as it thickens and the apples break down into a rich, chunky texture.

Step 5: Adjust Consistency and Flavor

Taste the chutney and adjust seasoning if needed. If it’s too thick, add a splash of water; if too thin, continue simmering until it reaches your desired consistency.

Step 6: Cool and Store

Allow the chutney to cool slightly, then transfer it into sterilized jars. Seal tightly for storage.
