Jamie Oliver BBQ Baked Beans

Jamie Oliver BBQ Baked Beans recipe

Jamie Oliver BBQ Baked Beans are slow-cooked beans simmered in a smoky tomato-based sauce with spices and a touch of sweetness until thick and glossy.

They combine sautéing aromatics with gentle simmering for balanced texture and flavour.

Ingredients

Scale

Serves 6

    • 2 cans (800 g) white beans, drained and rinsed

    • 1 tbsp olive oil

    • 1 small onion (finely chopped)

    • 2 cloves garlic (minced)

    • 400 g chopped tomatoes

    • 2 tbsp tomato purée

    • 1 tbsp brown sugar

    • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar

    • 1 tsp smoked paprika

    • ½ tsp ground cumin

    • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Optional:

    • ½ tsp chilli flakes

    • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

    • 100 g cooked bacon pieces

Instructions

Step 1: Build the Aromatic Base

Heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat.

Add chopped onion and cook for 5–6 minutes until soft and translucent.

Stir in garlic and cook briefly until fragrant.

This creates the flavour foundation.

Step 2: Develop the Sauce

Add tomato purée and cook for 1 minute to deepen flavour.

Stir in chopped tomatoes, brown sugar, vinegar, paprika, cumin, salt, and pepper.

Simmer gently for 10–15 minutes until slightly thickened.

The sauce should coat the back of a spoon.

Step 3: Add the Beans

Stir in drained beans and mix gently.

Simmer uncovered for another 15–20 minutes.

Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

The sauce should thicken and cling to the beans.

Step 4: Adjust and Rest

Taste and adjust seasoning, adding more vinegar or sugar if needed.

Allow to rest for 5–10 minutes before serving.

Resting enhances flavour balance.
